Douglas Gray Obituary

Douglas Glen Gray was born January 29, 1934, and died April 25, 2023, in the care of hospice at home in Salina, Kansas. Doug was known by many as a man of great faith and principle. He lived life with an attitude of joy and sharing God’s love with those who crossed his path. He loved and supported his family, and his granddaughters were ‘his joy’.

Doug was born in Wichita, and, during his life, he lived in many places in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and finally in Salina for the last 61 years.  Doug graduated from East High School in Wichita and from Wichita State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.  He also served as a First Lt. in the Kansas Army National Guard, certified in combat photography.

Doug spent the majority of his career as a marketing support manager/graphic artist for Wilson & Company, Engineers and Architects, retiring after 40 years.   He was a member of Belmont Boulevard Christian Church, Salina where he served as the Moderator, Elder, and chair of numerous committees, and he was a member of Optimist Club. He also served as the Regional Moderator of Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Kansas, and as an advisory committee member for the Commercial Art program at Salina Area Technical College.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sue (Hamilton) Gray; daughters Catherine “Cathy” Wilcox (Mike), their daughters Kenzie and Mallory; Emily Schrader (Doug) and their daughter Taylor; granddaughters Laural Gray and her daughter Penelope, and Addison Gray; and his sister Glenda (Bill) Young of Montana.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents Ervin and Eula (Bierman) Gray, his son Marc Gray, and many saints that filled his life with joy.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 28, 2023, at the Belmont Boulevard Christian Church, Salina. Doug’s family will receive friends from 4 until 7 pm Thursday April 27, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina. Memorials are suggested to the church.
