Jack Smith Obituary

SALINA - Jack Alexander Smith passed away from natural causes on May 11, 2022, surrounded by family at his home in Salina. Jack was born on October 20, 1929, to Wilbur Earl Smith and Emma (Thompson) Smith in Mankato, KS. Jack graduated from Mankato High School after which he joined the Army and served with the 196th Regimental Combat Team during the Korean War. He was also in the National Guard and was active in the VFW for many years.

Jack moved to Salina in 1962 and married Beverly Jean Bishop in 1965. Jack worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation until his retirement. He enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his whole life and made many trips to South Dakota and Canada in pursuit of these interest’s. In his retirement he restored an antique 1952 M38A1 Army jeep which he drove in parades and around the neighborhood. He also went on many trips with his wife and travelled all over the United States. Jack volunteered for Meals on Wheels and was a member of the First Christian Church.

He enjoyed being outside, working in his yard, taking walks, and working out at the YMCA. He never met a person he did not like and very rarely had anything negative to say. He believed in getting up early and was always willing to lend a hand or help a neighbor, friend, or stranger.

Jack is survived by his two sons, Jeffrey Alan Smith of Lee’s Summit, MO and Matthew Lynn Smith of Overland Park, KS, along with four grandchildren, Ethan Alexander Smith, Rachel Louise Smith, Owen Jeffrey Smith, and Nathan William Smith. He also is survived by his three nieces: Janice McCune of Grant, NE, Dixie Calderon of Arlington, TX and Alicia Fricke of Lawrence, KS.

Jack was proceeded in death by his parents, Earl, and Emma Smith; his sisters, Wilma Andrews, Dorothy McCullough, and Elizabeth Reece; his two nephews, Marvin Andrews, Billy Andrews; and niece, Mary Jane Mohler.

Memorial Service will be held for Beverly and Jack on Saturday, August 20, at 10:30 a.m. at Ryan Mortuary in Salina.
