Keith attended school in the Salina School system. At age 16, with Clarence's permission, he enlisted in the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he earned his GED. Keith truly loved his time in the Navy. His greatest passion in the Navy was when he was sailing aboard submarines. His time in the service included the Korean War and the Vietnam conflict. He pursued his love of drag racing for several years with his car, a Hurst/Olds he called Quicksilver, winning many trophies. Keith also enjoyed playing golf.

Keith married Sandra (Von Fange) Pliakis on June 27, 1970 and soon after adopted her daughter, Mary. This union was blessed with one son, Eric.  In 1996 Keith and Sandra retired to a home they had built for them in Prescott Valley, AZ. Keith continued working part time for an electrical company. He and Sandra also joined the local Moose Lodge where he was very actively involved and held various leadership roles.  He was a lifetime member of the VFW.
