John W. Poos
October 2, 1920 - December 10, 2003

WICHITA -- John W. Poos, 83, Wichita, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003.

Mr. Poos was born Oct. 2, 1920, in Nortonville. He joined the CPA firm of Kennedy and Coe in Salina in 1946 and was a senior partner until 1985. After moving to Wichita, he became a partner in Corporate Finance Associates until his death.

He was a 1942 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Business. He was a captain in the USAF during World War II as a contracting officer at the former Smoky Hill Airforce Base. He served as president of Kansas Society of CPA's (1971-1972); was a member of the Council American Institute of CPAs (1971-1972, 1978-1982); was president of the Salina United Fund in 1965; was president of the Salina Chamber of Commerce in 1973; served on the Board of Advisors for University of Kansas School of Business since 1963, serving as chairman from 1975-1990; was a life member of the KU Alumni Association and on its Development Steering Committee for the past 10 years; and was a member of the Williams Education Fund.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Martha; a son, Thomas William of Wichita; a daughter, Carol Sue Maloney of Wichita; three sisters, Harriet Nass of Atchison, Gretchen Westphal of Leawood and Dolly Lyon of Osprey, Fla.; four grandchildren, Marc Maloney of Sacramento, Calif., Matt Maloney of Wichita, Amy Poos Benson of Overland Park and Brad Poos of Kansas City, Mo.; and a great-grandchild, Brendan of Sacramento.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Salina, with the Revs. Jeffrey Crane and Robert Schadel officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery, Salina.

Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Wichita, or Trinity Lutheran Church, Salina, or the Williams Education Fund at KU.

Visitation will be today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina.

The casket will be closed.
