Lewis C. Crawford

Lewis C. Crawford, 78, Salina, died Thursday, July 15, 2004.

Mr. Crawford was born Dec. 7, 1925, in Salina. He was a board chairman from 1983 to 1987 of Wilson & Company, Engineers and Architects, Salina. He was a personal hire of Wilson & Company founder, Murray Wilson, and as a senior partner was structural department head and manager of computer operations. He was one of the first people to program computers in the United States, programming on one of the first 10 Bendix G-15 computers made and the DEC PDP-11. His design project experience included industrial building design, military installation structures and bridge design and structural investigations. Some of his memorable projects include a hydrologic study of Cheyenne Bottoms Wildfire Refuge, design of bridges on 50 miles of Kansas Turnpike, design of vaulting pole rating system, design of 2.5 acre plant structure for Cessna, Hutchinson, and design of underground structures for Titan missile sites. He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran, apprentice seaman, V-12 program. He received a bachelor of engineering degree from Yale University in 1946.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Henry Crawford, in 1995; his parents, Percy Wallace Crawford and Viva Estelle (Beichle) Crawford; and a brother, John "Jack" Wallace Crawford.

Survivors include a son, Lewis Henry "Hank" Crawford of Salina; and a daughter, Dorothy Caroline "Carol" Crawford of San Antonio.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Salina.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.
