Mrs. Schmidt was born Joan F. Graf on May 4, 1937, in Victoria. She was a cook at Sacred Heart Jr./Sr. High School for many years and also worked in the shoe department at Wal-Mart, Salina.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil, in 2006; and a daughter, Theresa, in 1959.

Survivors include three sons, David and wife Laura of Assaria, Michael and wife Mary of Ellsworth and Mark and wife Sandra of Salina; two daughters, Jolene Watson and husband Mel of Dodge City and Karen Sharp and husband David of Salina; a sister, Lillian Becker and husband John of Russell; a nephew, Wayne Becker of Cleveland; 12 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church, Salina, Father Kerry Ninemire officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Salina. A vigil/rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401.

Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Jr./Sr. High School, the American Cancer Society or the St. Fidelis Catholic Church Air Conditioning Fund, Victoria.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
