Verne D. Cross
December 7, 1918 - February 29, 2008

Verne D. Cross, 89, Salina, died Friday, Feb. 29, 2008. He was born Dec. 7, 1918, in Bevier, Mo. He was a sheet metal worker for 30 years and worked for several heating & air conditioning companies in the area. He and his wife, Anna Pfiefer, were married Oct. 31, 1941, in Chicago, Ill. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and received the Purple Heart for wounds received during the first assault wave at Iwo Jima. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna, in 2006.

He is survived by a daughter, Pam Carnes & husband Carl of Salina; two grandsons, Shawn Carnes & wife Christi and Jeremy Carnes & fiance Sarah, both of Salina; two great-grandchildren, Ian & Anna Carnes of Salina.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Ryan Mortuary, Salina. Burial will be in the Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday at Ryan. Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church or Hospice of Salina.
