Mary Anne Gardiner, of Salina, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008. She was born June 9, 1925, in Elizabeth, NJ, the daughter of Edward O. and Grace Sawyer (Schlichter) McConahay. Her father was the chief engineer during the construction of the Empire State Building and a VP with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. She married Gordon A. Gardiner, from RI, on Sept. 24, 1949. Mary Anne worked for 50 years as a registered nurse. She was a Cadet Nurse during World War II. She graduated from the Hospital of St. Barnabus for Women and Children in Newark, NJ, as a registered nurse in 1947. After graduating, she worked in labor and delivery, pediatrics and as house supervisor at Hadley Hospital in Hays, KS, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Larned, Southwest Medical Center in Liberal and Asbury Hospital/Salina Regional Health Center in Salina. She retired from Salina Regional Health Center in 1989. Mary Anne was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church and served actively on local and diocesan boards and committees in the Diocese of western Kansas and the Church of the Incarnation. She was preceded in death by her oldest son, Gordon A. Gardiner Jr., and brothers Charles Edward and William Thompson McConahay. She is survived by her husband, Gordon A. Gardiner, of Salina; and children, John E., of Salina, Margery L. and husband Donald Good, of Salina, Gary G. and wife Darlene, of York, SC, Christlieb E. and wife Julie, of Hutchinson, David C., of Great Bend, and Heidi A. and husband Keith Eschliman, of Hutchinson; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandsons, two great-granddaughters; and her cousin, Jarod Schlichter, of NJ. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24 at the Church of the Incarnation, 639 Max, Salina.
