John Marino, 89, Salina, passed away Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009 at the Kaye Pogue Hospice Center. Mr. Marino was born May 16, 1919 in Dumont, New Jersey, the son of Dominic and Lucy (Marone) Marino. He served in the US Army during WWII as a Technician Fourth Grade from 1942 to 1945 in the Northern France and Rhineland Campaigns. He was the general manager of the Salina Country Club for 30 years, retiring in 1984. John married Viola Carolyn Rolander on Sept. 2, 1943 in Columbus, Georgia. He was an avid and accomplished golfer qualifying and playing as an amateur in the Kansas City Open in the late 1950’s. He enjoyed horseracing, playing cards, and was very social. He greatly enjoyed his friends and was a member of the Salina Country Club, Salina Elks Lodge 718, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the KSIGA for which he served as the executive secretary. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Belle Marino in 2007. Survivors in addition to his wife Viola of the home include five children, Carolyn Malone of Manhattan Beach, CA, Rose Marino and husband David Hann of Lawrence, John C. Marino of Parsons, Lucille Marino of Lawrence and Anthony “Tony” Marino and wife Laura of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; eight sisters; three brothers; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401. Following the service a reception will be held at the Salina Country Club beginning at 11 a.m. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. in the Olsburg Cemetery, Olsburg. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the John Marino/Wally Beets Scholarship Fund in care of the Salina Country Club. |
