Harold Tillberg, 89, of Salina, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at Smoky Hill Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness. He was born Feb. 14, 1920, on the Tillberg farm near Hedville. He attended Powers Dist. 39 country school and graduated from Bavaria High School. Harold served in the Coast Guard in Petersburg, Alaska, during World War II. Following his return home, he and Maxine Watson were united in marriage on August 7, 1946, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. They established their home west of Salina on the farm where they resided for 62 years. They operated a dairy farm for nearly 40 years. Harold was active in many community activities, including 4-H leader, Dist. 26 school board member, church council, Lions Club and VFW. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church his entire life. In later years his interests and hobbies included attending family gatherings, woodworking and supporting the grandchildren and their activities. Surviving members of his family include his wife, Maxine, of the home; daughter, Shirley (David) Zimmerman, of Ponca City, OK; son Eugene Tillberg, of the home; and daughter, Linda (Garry) Berges, of Junction City; grandchildren, Paula (Michael) Shuck, Aaron (Heather) Zimmerman, Nathan Zimmerman, Travis Berges and Janelle Berges; great grandchildren, Evan Shuck and Ethan Shuck; and a large extended family of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, sisters and one grandson, Eric Berges. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 3, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 255 South Seventh, Salina, with Pastor Kent Happel officiating. Burial will follow in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. 8th, Salina, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Foundation. |
