TOPEKA ó Nels Richard Nelson 89, formerly of Salina, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2018. He was born to Helen and Clarence Nelson, Nov. 19, 1928, at St. Johnís Hospital in Salina. He was a graduate of Brookville High School.
He farmed early in life, and then managed country grain elevators for Evans Grain Company for 32 years in Lindsborg, Rydal, Clifton and Culver. Following this career, Richard returned to farming on the old family farm. An avid steward of wildlife, he loved the out-of-doors and taught his children to respect the land and the proper way to hunt. His greatest love was for his family in which he took great pride. Richard was a member of the Sunrise Presbyterian Church in Salina.
Survivors include: his beloved wife of seventy years, Mary Ellen; his sons, Royce (Linda) of Salina, and Douglas (Cappi) of Topeka; his daughter, Dana Rae Hale (Chuck) of Topeka; granddaughters, Amy Friedel of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Polly Peters (Aric) of Overland Park, Jennifer Stuart (Luke) of Olathe, and Carrie Nelson of Fairway; grandsons, Ryan Nelson (Leslie) and Andrew Nelson, both of Topeka; great-grandchildren, Lexi and Devin Wegner of Olathe, Grant and Luke Peters of Overland Park, Nathan Friedel of Highlands Ranch, and Graham Nelson of Topeka.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; and brother, Edwin Dean Nelson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, Salina. Following a luncheon at the church, interment will be at Prairie Mound Cemetery, Ellsworth County.
